This stately home required the clearing out of an existing chopped-up
and under-utilized wing to create space for everyday use: a Mudroom,
Kitchen, Breakfast Area and Family Room. As the existing wing was
not quite sufficient to house all of these program elements, several
large bays were added to extend the space out into the yard.
The Kitchen is centered around a 4-foot square island, topped with
heart pine that matches the new flooring. A black granite countertop
links the Kitchen with a breakfast table, jutting into the side
yard one of the bay windows. Two other bays at the Family Room expand
the seating areas to create an sun-filled an open room. A painted
wood paneled ceiling pulls the entire space together.
At the exterior, the roof of the Family Room bay extends to create
a roofed entry, leading into a small Mudroom area.
